CHAPTER SEVEN

AUGUST YAWNED AS he locked the clinic’s front door, then glanced at the silly wall calendar. Mentally he marked off another day in Tennessee.

Another successful day.

Time seemed to fly as the days turned to weeks. And August wished he felt that the rush was a good thing. That he could say the age old cliché that time flies when you’re having fun.

Which was true. But that wasn’t the primary feeling in his body. As much as he wanted it to be.

He should be having fun with Kit. And he was. He just wished he could enjoy it more rather than dealing with bone-deep exhaustion at the end of most days.

The exhaustion wasn’t a surprise. He and Kit were covering the load of at least three vets and hadn’t had a day off all month. Somehow he’d managed to be at the clinic every day. Even Sundays, though he’d made sure their Sunday time was only half days.

Only half days.

This wasn’t going to work in the long term. He stretched his head, trying to work out the knots in the back of his neck. A nice long shower and night spent next to Kit were the first things his body needed. But the second was a day or two off.

And Kit needed time off too. Ideally he’d convince her to take a vacation, but he’d settle for two days off in a row. A real weekend together.

August pursed his lips and rolled his shoulders as he prepared himself to enter the office his father and Kit shared in the back. She needed a break.

We just need a relief vet for the weekend. A bit of a break for both of us. We can go hiking. Or horseback riding. Get some fresh air. Not interested in those options? How about a weekend of streaming movies and seeing how much popcorn we can consume? A weekend without stepping foot in here, just the two of us.

His mental speech sounded all right...but how would the woman he knew was bent over paperwork after a day serving more than three dozen patients feel? Kit prided herself on her long workdays. But burnout could happen to anyone. And he suspected she was teetering on it without realizing it.

How many vets had he subbed for that had worked themselves too hard for their clinics? One had nearly left veterinarian practice for good and August had never forgotten his colleagues’ comments about how Dr. Burke had been so productive right before the burnout. Accomplishing more than any of them.

In an effort to stave off the rising cliff, to prove to himself that he was fine. Until he wasn’t.

That was the thing about burnout. If you weren’t actively giving yourself time to rejuvenate your body and spirit, they’d eventually demand it.

Her need for perfectionism, her constant concern for bettering herself and the clinic weren’t sustainable. She didn’t seem to understand that improvement wasn’t a constant path of escalation. Eventually things had to level off or you went mad.

He took a deep breath.
